1) Both Ai Wei Wei’s and Patricia Piccinini’s works have one thing in common: they are differentiated
from other media such as fictions and newpapers in terms of making the audience engaged in their works.
2) How does viewing the artwork enhance the experience of reading the article?
Through viewing the artwork, I was able to understand how empathy and sympathy play an important role in gaining knowledge.
3) “One way art informs us is by giving us a kind of conceptual knowledge: knowledge about our own concepts. Conceptual knowledge can include our own feelings or mental states, such as having empathy for others.” D/A?
I agree with the statement that art informs us by providing a kind of conceptual knowledge, which can include our own feelings, mental states and empathy for others. As Herrington the author of the essay said, “art does not only inform us but also give us a feeling of ‘what it is like’ to be someone else.”, the basic step for comprehending and interpreting an artwork properly is to be sympathetic and interactive toward the work. If it had not been for our ability to be empathetic, we could not have been able to produce and interpret the work created by a third person.
