What Is Intuition?

Intuition: the ability to understand something instinctively without the need for conscious reasoning.
Knowledge questions:
1) To what extent can we trust intuition in life-threatening situation?
2) What role do reason and intuition play in our decision making?

I'm curious how people can save their own lives relying on their intuition.
There was a heartbreaking incident happened in Korea on April 16th 2014.
It is also known as the sinking of Sewol Ferry which took away so many young students' lives.
When the ferry was tilting, the students who were going on a field trip detected an omen.
The crew and school staff told them to stay still and stand by.
Some of the crew actually escaped when the students were just waiting for the announcement and shivering with fear.
Some students who followed their intuition and bold enough to have their own faith could manage to survive.
While, some who listened to adults and relied on reasoning could not survive.

Knowledge Claims:
1) In some cases of emergencies, it is safer to rely on intuition than reason.
2) All human beings are naturally born with their intuitive abilities. The only difference is whether or not they are aware of it and develop this ability for further use.
My personal question:
Is "confirmation bias" a part of intuition?
Info found on the Internet:
Confirmation bias occurs when we search for, interpret, or recall information in a way that confirms our own beliefs or hypotheses.
Here’s an example:
“My dog always acts strangely one or two hours before an earthquake hits our town, so I believe my dog can sense earthquakes before they happen”
This person has drawn a relationship between her dog’s behaviour and earthquakes, and now probably thinks her dog has a “sixth sense” ( ie intuition) But what about the times her dog acted strangely and an earthquake didn’t hit? In this case, confirmation bias is a tendency to ignore information or data that contradicts your hypothesis. Memory plays a role here too – we are more likely to recall information that supports our existing beliefs.
